A Tribute
by Vic Williams
Chance was a pup with little chance to go to be a field trial dog. He was one of 30 pups born within the same month at a time when there were lots of other litters available. Joy and I were coming back from Nationals and made the decision to "take a chance" with one of the last remaining of the 30 pups, most of which had gone to pet homes.

From the beginning Chance was a "different" kind of Brit. As a pup he was calm and cool. He preferred to sleep on the floor by the bed instead of on the bed. When he was in the fields he went his own way instead of staying by your side. Yet he was always willing and wanting to please. He would come in when called, jump up for a pet, and nibble your ear in affection.

When Chance was two years old we took him to Tom Tracy for an "evaluation". Tommy ran him around for 45 minutes from horseback and after we finished he looked down at Chance and asked, "What do you see different about him and the other dogs?" I didn't know what he meant and asked. He said, "He is not breathing hard; he's not even winded." To test his theory he put Chance in a roading harness and ran him another 45 minutes and this time had 2 nearly broke finds. Tom said, "This is your hour dog."

That was the beginning of Chance's career with Tommy. After summers in South Dakota Chance came into his own and with Tommy's training, his range got ever wider until it was extreme. Yet he always handled, even if it was occasionally a little after the judges stopped the clock. But as he aged so did his awareness of the time alloted and so he became more and more consistent.

If Chance had a hole it was his honesty on his birds. When Chance was lost on point Tommy would say that he wished that just once in a while that he would take out or leave birds after he had been there for so long. Time after time Tommy would have to go looking for Chance and find him on point, head high, tail high, and shivering from standing still in the cold.

Chance was a dog who was more all-age bird dog than any person I have ever known could fully handle and realize. His abilities far exceeded the normal and were often misunderstood and certainly misjudged. Without fail, when I ran him and he disappeared and I was told to pick him up, he was either to the front exactly where he was supposed to be or I had left him on point.

In my mind and in my heart, there will never be another "Chance". The end of his career marks the end of an era. Our grief is palpable. This last year Chance was coming into his own and into the spotlight of the Brittany field trial community. He was a force to be reckoned with.

Chance, you changed my life and you will be so very missed...

The 2007 Deep South Free for All Amateur Championship was one of the most profound memory makers in Vic Williams, Chance's owner, life. Vic has handled Chance many times but it all came together in the 4th hour brace of this event.

NOMINATION

5xCH/3xRU FC CHANCEY JACKPOT LOTTO
(18 One Hour Placements)
TO THE

FIELD TRIAL HALL OF FAME

Chance was a true all age dog competing on the All Age Championship circuit.  The measure of a truly great dog is where he completed and his competition.  A few of the top dogs competing (at that time) were 2X NFC Diamond Hill Dan HOF; NFC Shambo’s Dark Shadow, NFC/2X NAFC Just Call Me Roy, NAFC Tequila Jack II, and Smarteyes Joker to mention a few.  Chance placed in 13 States including AL, GA, NC, VA, KY, TN, IA, MO, NE, OK, KS, SD, and IL.

From the start at 2 years old, Chance was taking the blue in hour stakes! While compiling his 5 Championship wins, 3 Championship Runner-ups and 18 hours placements, Chance made it into the top 25 dogs competing for Purina Points 4 years in a row and within the top 10 dogs in his last two years. It takes an incredible dog to win the Free for All or the US Open.  Chance took the blue at the Free for All in 2004 and 2005.  Chances’ remaining Championships included the 2006 ABC Pheasant, 2007 Deep South Amateur and 2007 Southern Open Brittany; Runner-up titles from the 2006 S.O.B., 2006 Prairie State and the 2007 ABC Chicken Classic. Chance came into is own and became consistent during the spring of 2006 placing in 10 hours stakes before his untimely tragic death in October of 2007 during the Holman Classic.

As is the case to offend, Chance was only bread a few times with in off springs becoming of age now.

Respectfully,

Paul Pollock
